Cómo hacer un huerto ecológico en casa: dónde lo instalo?
Una vez que nos hemos lanzado a la satisfactoria tarea de comenzar a plantar un huerto en casa, lo primero de todo es decidir su óptima ubicación dentro de nuestro espacio de exterior, tarea más importante cuanto más reducido tengamos este espacio. Es muy útil hacernos un pequeño planito a escala de nuestro lugar y comenzar a medir y pasar al papel, y del papel al terreno, para tomar consciencia del espacio real de que disponemos.

Qué es lo primero y principal a tener en cuenta?… obvio, todos sabemos qué es lo que nunca puede faltarle a una planta para VIVIR: LUZ y AGUA.
La luz del sol es esencial para tu huerto urbano
Por lo que respecta a la LUZ, las hortícolas, como cualquier vegetal , realizan la fotosíntesis (pequeño repaso gratuito de las Ciencias Naturales de primaria 🙂 , utilizando la energía de la luz del sol para (a partir de CO2, agua y nutrientes) producir materia orgánica y oxígeno. Dicho esto, cuanta más luz (más horas diarias) puedan nuestras plantas recibir en la ubicación que elijamos, mejor que mejor, más crecerán y (por la parte que nos toca), estarán en condiciones de darnos mejores cosechas. Toca pues observar bien nuestro jardín, terraza, patio o balcón, apuntar la trayectoria del sol en la estación en la que nos vayamos encontrando, y para ello nos podemos ayudar de una brújula (siempre llevo una en el bolso, al igual que la cinta métrica). Deberíamos asegurar que a principios del verano nuestro huerto reciba al menos 6 horas de luz diaria, aunque este dato es simplemente una orientación, ni mucho menos una premisa. El dato más fiable siempre lo obtendremos con la práctica y la experiencia de trabajar en nuestro propio espacio de huerto ecológico.
Ahora bien, cuidado con las calores de nuestro verano!!!!!! Las temperaturas tan extremas y el exceso de evaporación que sufre cualquier zona de exterior en la temporada estival puede producir un serio estrés a las plantas hortícolas. Podemos ayudar con estructuras de sombreo (si no disponemos de sombra suficiente en nuestro huerto) que protejan a las plantitas en las horas más duras del día.
Aquí entra el segundo elemento que nunca puede faltar en abundancia en nuestro pequeño huerto. El AGUA se podrá aportar:
- Manualmente, lo cual te llevará más tiempo (eso sí, por propia experiencia sé que el momento de regar tu huerto a la caída de la tarde, ese olor a tierra mojada y el sonido del agua cayendo mientras se escuchan las chicharras cantando no tiene precio). Hay que pensar que aunque en invierno puede ser suficiente con una vez por semana, en verano habrá que regar como mínimo 2 veces al día.
- Instalando un sistema de riego automático, indispensable cuando no dispongas de tiempo a diario para regar o tengas que irte de vacaciones y no quieras encontrar a tu vuelta todo el huerto completamente seco. En los pequeños espacios que estamos hablando, será un sistema de lo más sencillo y económico. Se pueden elaborar también soluciones caseras de recipientes con autoriego que mantienen el sustrato húmedo.

Pues ya tenemos la ubicación del huerto urbano en casa. Ahora habrá que ir pensando ya en los recipientes adecuados, un buen sustrato ecológico y elegir las plantas siguiendo unos esquemas de cultivo acordes con nuestros gustos y necesidades.
